I don’t pass judgement on the things I eat based on whether they’re healthy or not. I simply eat things that I like, be it quinoa or burgers or um, an ice cream filled Krispy Kreme donut. If something’s healthy, I suppose in the deep recesses of my mind, it gets an extra brownie point, but in all honesty, I don’t ever eat something “just because it’s healthy”.

Life is too short, people.

So when what you want is also healthy, well hotdamn, two magical worlds collide, resulting in an explosion of confetti and Care Bear love.

I eat these chocolate protein powerballs like they are dessert. Seriously. They kind of taste like rum balls without the rum, which if you’re like me and you never liked the rum anyway, is basically just fricking delicious chocolate balls. They’re also super easy to make (five minutes, honest). I made a batch Sunday morning. They were gone Sunday night.

And so I made a new batch Monday. It’s that good. And oh yeah, they’re healthy too.

Recipe adapted from The Healthy Chef.

Chocolate protein power balls
180g raw almonds
30g protein powder (preferably chocolate flavoured)
8 fresh dates, pitted (I recommend Medjool dates, which you can get from most grocery and health food stores)
1 tablespoon unsweetened cocoa powder
1/2 tablespoon natural vanilla extract
1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
dessicated coconut for rolling
  1. Put the almonds, protein powder, cocoa and cinnamon in a blender or food processor and blend until fairly smooth (how chunky you want the bits of almonds to be is up to you).
  2. Add the dates and vanilla extract, and blend some more.
  3. Remove the protein mixture into a large mixing bowl. Add a splash of water and mix in with a wooden spoon until you feel the mixture come together.
  4. Roll small 1-inch balls with your hands (the mixture should hold easily). Then roll in coconut and place aside.
  5. Refrigerate. The protein balls keep for a couple of weeks.
Makes about 18 1-inch sized balls.
